6 Myths About Physiotherapy That Are Keeping You in Pain

April 14, 2026

If you’ve been “dealing” with a nagging injury or chronic issue, you’ve likely heard a lot of unsolicited advice. Maybe a neighbour or friend told you to “just stretch it out,” or a TikTok video convinced you that you need a $700 massage gun to “fix your alignment”.

Misinformation, or incomplete information is often the biggest barrier to recovery. At The Institute for Sports Physiotherapy, we see patients every day who waited months or even years to seek help because of a myth they believed.

Let’s set the record straight and debunk the 6 biggest “myths” about physiotherapy so you can finally get back in the game.

1. “I need a doctor’s referral to see a physio in Ontario.”

The Reality: Physiotherapists are a “First Contact Practitioner” meaning that anyone can see a physiotherapist without a referral. Some insurance companies will require a referral in order to use your coverage but that is dependent on each insurance policy. Waiting weeks for a specialist appointment just to get a referral often turns a minor injury into a chronic issue. You can book an assessment today and start healing tomorrow.

2. “I can just do these exercises from YouTube, or even ChatGPT.”

The Reality: We love a good DIY spirit, but YouTube and Chat GPT don’t have eyes. It can’t see that your core isn’t engaging or that you are using your hip to compensate. A “one-size-fits-all” video regularly exacerbate an injury especially when the underlying problem has not been correctly identified and managed first. We provide a customized blueprint tailored to your specific injury and your specific goals. A correct management plan will significantly improve the work you are putting in at home.

3. “I need an MRI or X-ray before I start.”

The Reality: Research shows that imaging can often lead to what we call “VOMIT’s”—Victims of Medical Imaging Technology. This happens when we find normal age-related changes in a joint and classify them as degeneration leading patients to catastrophize or think that their issue cannot be corrected. A skilled physiotherapist can perform a detailed clinical exam that is often more “functional” than an MRI and create a plan of action to address these functional issues. We treat the person, not the picture. During the course of treatment, if we feel any imaging is required, we will coordinate with your family doctor to get the requisition started.

4. “Physiotherapy or even Sports Physiotherapy is only for athletes or post-surgery.”

The Reality: If you have a body, you are an “athlete” in the game of life. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a parent lifting a toddler, or someone who spends 8 hours at a desk every day, Physio is for you. We treat everything from tension headaches and “tech neck” to Olympic gold medalists.

5. “It’s just expensive exercise I can do at the gym.”

The Reality: You aren’t paying for the “exercise”; you’re paying for the clinical reasoning and expertise. At ISP, we have decades of combined education and specialized training into all aspects of human movement and performance. In the end, YOU need to put in the work to fix the problem, but the expertise and guidance provided by ISP will ensure it is done correctly, efficiently and sustainably. We ensure every movement you do is moving the needle toward recovery.

6. “Once the pain is gone, I’m cured.”

The Reality: Pain is usually the last thing to show up and the first thing to leave. If you stop treatment the moment the pain hits zero, you haven’t addressed the underlying weakness that caused the injury in the first place. True Physio is about resilience, ensuring the injury never comes back. This is the point where you should be seeing us significantly less (or not at all) while you continue to work with the information we have provided to correct the long-term issue. We are always available to answer questions or re-evaluate if needed.
